Today we are talking to Scott Raulsome, owner of Burton’s Bookstore in Greenport, NY.

RD: Please give us a short description of your store.

Scott: We are a small independent bookstore located in Greenport, NY, on Long Island’s beautiful North Fork. The store has been here since 1979, but I took ownership of the place a little over a year ago, and have since given the store a complete overhaul to bring it up to date. We pride ourselves on a very current and very varied selection featuring lots of fiction and non-fiction titles, a large classics section, and a large array of local and nautical books.

RD: Have digital devices and apps changed how people use notebooks?

Scott: I see a lot of similarities between physical books and notebooks in regards to their relationship with apps and devices. I don’t think the way they are used has changed as much as the frequency. Luckily, the past couple of years have shown a resurgence for both as people look for a way to unplug for a while. Sales of notebooks and journals have been strong since I opened.

RD: What do you see as the future of notebooks?

Scott: The future is strong. I see people of all ages buying notebooks, journals, and planners, and this is a good indicator of longevity. As long as there are creative people in the world looking for the ways and means to express themselves, notebooks will have a place in commerce. There is a such a wide variety of these products available that the selection process is part of the fun – especially for brick and mortar shops like mine.

RD: Why do some people continue to use paper in a digital world?

Scott: I think the freedom to personalize writing is one of the biggest draws of paper. Similar to reading a paper book as opposed to a digital one, the process is ultimately more intimate and rewarding.

RD: How do people “discover” paper and notebooks now that so many stationery and office supply stores have disappeared?

Scott: Bookstores have experienced a similar trend in the past decade as their numbers have dwindled. However, the past couple of years have shown a reversal in that trend as more independent bookstores have opened across the country. People appreciate the personal touch, customer service, and community value of an independent bookstore. The best way to discover new notebooks and journals is to visit and support your local bookshop or stationery store.

RD: Any additional comments or observations that you would like to add?

Scott: Rhodia brand products have been a welcome addition to the store. They look great on the shelf and people truly appreciate the wide variety of journals, notebooks, and planners offered. I look forward to expanding my selection of Rhodia products and to a long fruitful relationship between my store and your company!

  2. Love, love, LOVE seeing indie bookstores featured. Nothing sexier than the smell of books and paper.

    Please feature the website links to these reader/writer meccas so we can follow and support them? I know there are lots of authors who offer autographed copies of their books via their local indies (I would kill for an indie bookstore close to me), so folks across the country or the world order on line. So easy to add on a notebook or journal to a specialty book order to make the shipping cost-effective.
