Veterans Day is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday observed on November 11 which marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)
Today is expected to be the last Veterans Day of one of the longest military conflicts in our nation’s history, as we welcome home our Iraq war veterans. Dec. 31 marks the the date by which virtually all 39,000 troops left in Iraq have been ordered to return to the United States.
